 NJCEA Staff Development Day by Kevin J. Kavanaugh

 The New Jersey Chapter of CEA Staff Development Day on Friday May 8, 2009 was a huge success!!!  125 educators from the New Jersey Department of Corrections, the Juvenile Justice Commission, the federal institution, the county detention centers, the local public schools and colleges attended.    This staff development day was free to members and $30. for non-members.  Presenters were from Saint Peter’s College, Thomas Edison State College, Union County College, Middlesex County College, the New Jersey Department of Labor, the New Jersey Public Television Network, the New Jersey Department of Corrections, the New Jersey State Parole Board, local public high schools, LL Teach, Inc., and the National Institute for Literacy. Workshops included the following topics: Re-Entry Services – During Incarceration and After Release, EFF (Equipped for the Future) in the Multi-Media Classroom and Lab, Offender Workforce Development Specialist Training, Teaching Math in Corrections, The Mathematical Map: How to Teach Math as a Language, Games Games Games, Yes! Math 'Puzzles' are Appropriate for Teaching Mathematics!, FREE! LINCS Resources and Trainings to Improve Your Literacy Services Locally, and Experience Matters: Online Degree Programs at Thomas Edison State College.   The highlight of the day was the presentation of our 2009 NJCEA Teacher of the Year to Robert H. Yancey, Sr..  Mr. Yancey served 27 years in the Armed Forces -– 7 in the Navy, followed by 20 in the Army. He retired in 1971 as a veteran of three wars:  World War II, Korea, and Vietnam and is the recipient of the Bronze Star w/cluster, Army Commendation w/cluster, Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross, Combat Infantryman Badge, and Sharpshooter Badge.  Mr. Yancey also received the State of New Jersey Commendation Medal, State of New Jersey Distinguished Service Medal, Burlington County Military Service Medal, and Enlisted Heritage, Airman Leadership School Medal.   Bob has been well known in the New Jersey Department of Corrections since beginning his career in 1976, first as a social studies teacher and then as vice-principal of Garden State’s Education Department.  After retiring in 1993, he has been volunteering by teaching Behavior Modification to DOC inmates at Garden State Correctional Facility twice per week.  He also has been a regular motivational speaker at local high schools and several correctional facilities.   The newly elected officers for the 2009-2011 term were sworn in at the staff development day by Region 1 Director Charlie Buchal.  The officers are as follows: Kevin Kavanaugh, President Patty Friend, Vice-President Peggy Turanin, Secretary Ian Hughes, Treasurer
